Varicose veins are a common condition affecting many men and women just like you.

Certain risk factors could put you at increased risk for varicose veins, including family history, aging, being overweight or obese, pregnancy, or prolonged standing as part of your job.

 

To understand how varicose veins form, it’s important to learn how veins function first.

 

The veins in the legs pump blood back to the heart.

Inside these veins are small valves. These valves work against gravity to keep blood flowing back to the heart.

Varicose veins occur when the valves become weaker, causing blood to back up and make the veins swell.

One of the most commonly impacted vein systems is found in the leg—the great saphenous vein, or GSV system.

The GSV is not visible beneath the skin, but often when the veins in the GSV system malfunction, those close to the surface of the skin bulge and are visible.

These problems with the GSV system may not only be unsightly, they may also cause uncomfortable symptoms such as heaviness, achiness, swelling, throbbing, and itching.

But the discomfort caused by varicose veins can be alleviated. There is a simple, nonsurgical solution that takes less than 1 hour.

Varithena is the only FDA-approved foam treatment used to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the GSV and other related veins in the leg’s GSV system.

In clinical studies, the majority of patients treated with Varithena experienced improvements in symptoms: heaviness, achiness, swelling, throbbing, and itching.

The most common side effects seen with Varithena are leg pain or discomfort, injection site bruising or pain, and potentially serious blood clots in the leg veins. These are not all of the possible side effects of Varithena.

You should not be treated with Varithena if you are allergic to polidocanol or have clots in your blood vessels.

 

Varithena is not thermal ablation and does not require multiple injections to numb the treatment site as with tumescent anesthesia.

The administration of Varithena is minimally invasive: There are no incisions, sedation, or general anesthesia required.

Patients can even go back to doing some activities the very same day as treatment, and the entire procedure should take less than an hour.

When treating with Varithena, the doctor numbs the injection site before administering a small amount of Varithena microfoam through a catheter or direct injection into the malfunctioning vein.

The Varithena microfoam fills the desired section of the vein and treats the vein wall. This causes the diseased vein to collapse.

Blood flow is redirected to healthier nearby veins. The microfoam then disperses as it comes into contact with blood in healthy veins.

The physician then uses the same process to treat any additional veins that require treatment.

A single treatment session may be all that’s required, or it may take more. Your doctor will determine the number of treatments needed based on the number and size of the veins being treated.

You will need to follow postprocedure care instructions provided by your doctor.

Compression stockings and bandages will need to be worn for a period of two weeks to support proper healing.

Some activities can be resumed the very same day, but heavy exercise should be avoided for at least 1 week.

Varithena is a prescription medication, so it’s important to be aware of any possible side effects.

Severe allergic reactions have been reported in people treated with liquid forms of polidocanol and some patients have died from these reactions.

 

Varithena is a microfoam that contains polidocanol. A healthcare professional will observe you for signs of allergic reactions for at least 10 minutes after you are treated with Varithena.

Varithena® improves symptoms related to or caused by varicose veins, and the appearance of varicose veins.

Minimally invasive, nonsurgical

Treatment with Varithena® does not require any incisions or general anesthesia. It usually takes the doctor less than an hour to administer Varithena®.  Patients may resume some activities the same day but should avoid heavy exercise for one week.

Types of veins treated. Varithena® treats a wide range of varicose veins in the GSV system, including:

The diseased vein collapses and the microfoam is deactivated. When the malfunctioning vein collapses, blood flow shifts to healthier veins nearby.
